EQ Editor Update Live

November 30, 2012

Patch fixes issue with bracer sizing for sups and subs. Feel free to report any issues with the app here.

This will likely be the last update for this year, but expect a major UI update in January for both pro and lite versions.

I am writing text, but I do not found the space key, where is it?

    • It’s the blue key right next to the equal symbol that looks like a bracketed underscore.

Thanks a lot, you saved my life.

Hi. Any news about that January update? Thanks

    • The update got pushed back due to other commitments. I have finally been able to work on it some these past two weeks.

My latest focus has been redoing the draw code to use Core Text instead. This, plus finding a good paper on Math Typesetting has greatly improved the resulting math.

I had already finished the new input system in Dec. but I need to now debug both the new input and draw systems before I can release it. I hope to do a write up explaining the changes soon, but the new input is basically ripping out the custom buttons and replacing it with the standard keyboard + macros that auto-complete.

      Hope this helps.

        Hi eqeditor.

Thanks a lot for your answer. The new input system you talk about seems intriguing to me. Can’t wait to see it 😀

      • I’ve gone ahead and done a status update post with some screenshots. This should give you, and other people, a clearer picture of what’s going on but there’s still quite a bit of work left before release. Let me know what you think!

Eqeditor. I have seen the screenshots. The new system looks clean, and sure it would be fast, but there’s something that disturbs me: maths are a universal language, so it doesn’t matter where you come from, you can understand it. With the old system, that works with math symbols, anybody can use your app.

Now, with the macro system, people not talking English will have problems with the app. For example, I come from Spain, and will not have problems since English is a known language for me, but one of my teacher mates learnt French as foreign language, and when I showed him the new interface, he said he won’t update, since it would be a nightmare to find wherever he wanted to write.

        Have you considered this?

      • Thanks alot for looking at these. I have given this some thought, part of the reason why I designed the current interface the way I did was to remove much of the dependence on English.

One thing I have done with most (though not currently all) of the macros is have the auto complete show the symbol it will generate as well. So typing “al” will auto complete to “aleph ℵ” then you can select through and the next one is “all equals =”, then “alpha α”, etc. So if you know part of the macro, you should at least be able to pick out the glyph you want much of the time.

Also, I decided to make it so all of the standard TeX macros work, which should make it familiar for a large number of University level math people. There’s no way to have the standard keyboard and remove the dependence on some macro system and I think alot of people who might use it are turned off by having to learn a custom interface. So I will make sure and include a symbol lookup that doesn’t depend on language (likely by tweaking the current help system), and make sure there is some symbol available for each auto-complete, but I don’t think trying to teach it 50 different words for “integral” will be a likely solution.

Thanks again for looking at this!
